Lena Marie Sparrow, age 99, and one of Gallatin County's oldest residents,  went to be with the lord on January 3, 2023. She was born in Mt. Vernon, IN on September 8, 1923 to Lawrence and Ethel (Brown) Williams. They moved to Gallatin County when Lena was 13, where she resided the remainder of her life. On November 2, 1940, she married Thomas Sparrow Jr. They were married for 66 years when Junior passed away on April 19, 2006. To this union was born two children – Janice Ambrous and Tommy Sparrow. She spent most of her life caring for her family. Lena was a kind and loving person. She cared more about others needs and feelings than her own. God gave her the talent of being an accomplished seamstress. She could take a piece of material and do wonders. She worked at Loretta Nursing Home for 13 years as their seamstress.
Lena will best be remembered for her love for her family. She understood that it is the small things in life that makes life the most enjoyable, like those phone calls, her love for Popcorn Day and visits from her children and grandchildren, she so loved to tell you about. She made a difference in the lives she touched, whether it was her own family, her church family, or her neighbors. She loved them all and will be greatly missed.
Lena is survived by a daughter Janice Ambrous, a son and daughter- in- law, Tom and Darlene Sparrow. Six grandchildren – Dawana (Kevin) Edmonds, Jamie Lynn Poshard, Crystal (Keith) Watts, Eric (Cindy) Ambrous, Tracy (Tony) Evans, Ryan Sparrow, and 10 great grandchildren, Kimberly Poshard, Katlyn Edmonds, Daniel Poshard, Brody Watts, Megan Riley, Jordan Ambrous, Hannah Hinton, Chloe Evans, Isaiah Evans, & Bryson Sagesar.  10 great -great grandchildren, Macy Smith, Jada Hatton, Marley Smith, CJ, Maverick, & Dawson Ambrous, Wyatt Ambrous,  Zoey Hinton, Destiny Poshard, & Mackie Poshard. A sister Mary Ann (Gary) Dillard, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
On February 18, 1996, Lena dedicated her life to the Lord and spent the remainder of her days faithfully serving him. She was a member of Calvary’s Promise Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Williams and Dwight Williams.

Visitation for Lena will be Thursday January 5, 2022 at 11:00 am – 1:00 PM, at Cox & Son Funeral Home in New Haven, IL. The funeral service to follow immediately at 1:00 PM with Rev. Buddy Hubbard officiating. Interment will follow at Asbury Cemetery.
