Mary Elizabeth Maloney Wargel, 87, passed away peacefully at her home on the farm in rural Equality, IL on July 20, 2024. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all. Mary Beth was born on September 29, 1936, on her parent’s farm in Ponds Settlement east of Ridgway, IL to Daniel Maloney and Margaret Luckett Maloney. After attending the one-room Daily School, St. Vincent Academy and St. Joseph Catholic School, she graduated from Ridgway High School. She attended Fontbonne University in St. Louis, MO and graduated with a degree in dietetics.
She married Charles Joseph Wargel on April 21, 1960. They made their home in Belleville, Illinois where she worked as a registered dietician at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and gave birth to their first child, Donna Scheppe (Bill). The family then moved to Shelbyville, Illinois where their second daughter was born, Nina Wargel. After moving back to Gallatin County to farm the Bernard and Anna Hamilton farm, they were blessed with four more children, Helen Wargel, Thomas Wargel (Claudine), Teresa Boulds (Brady) and Katie Anderson (Michael). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrew Scheppe, Karalyn Scheppe, Kathleen Scheppe (Anshika), Landon Wargel, Kinser Wargel, Logan Boulds (Sara), Noah Boulds, Ely Boulds and one great-grandchild, Moxley Boulds.
She was preceded in death by one infant son, Joseph, her parents, Daniel and Margaret and her siblings and their spouses, Leonard and Jean Heimann, Patrick and Doreen Maloney, Richard and Alice Maloney, Ted and Corinne Miller and David and Frances Maloney along with her in-laws, Joe and Rose Wargel and sisters-in-law, Jean Wargel and Ida Nell Wargel. She is survived by her youngest sister, Frances Traweek and husband Tony, brother-in-law Bob Wargel, special life-long friend Joan Mueth, cherished neighbors Doug, Kelly, Natalie and Nick Schimp (Abbey) and many beloved nieces, nephews and their families.
Mary Beth worked tirelessly her entire life alongside Charlie in their farming operation, raising their family and volunteering extensively. She lived her life in service, dedicated to her family, church and community. She volunteered extensively at St. Joseph Church, St. Kateri Church and Gallatin County 4-H and extension, and she was a 4-H leader for the Sunshine Girls 4-H club for over 20 years. Mary Beth was a voracious reader and continued her desire to learn throughout her life which she inherited from her father, DJ.
A recent quote shared among her family that captures Mary Beth’s essence: Over many, many trips to the grocery store raising her family of six kids, Mary Beth knew many at the store when she arrived. If she didn’t know you when she arrived, she made sure she did by the time she left.
Mary Beth blessed many with her kindness and concern and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
