Mike Bates

Michael R. Bates, age 72, lifelong New Haven resident passed away at his home March 16, 2023 surrounded by his loving family after a lifelong battle with sickness.  Mike as most knew him was born on May 2, 1950 in Shawneetown, IL to the late Arthur and Margie (Dixon) Bates.  On February 12, 1971 he married the love of his life, Jill (Roark) Bates who survives.

Mike graduated from Ridgway High School and then attended Lockyear college in Evansville.  He will be remembered for his uncanny knowledge of cars and trucks, he worked for many years as parts manager at Brown Chevrolet in Fairfield and Teffertiller Motors in McLeansboro before retiring due to health reasons.  He was always thinking and could fix almost anything, even came up with the idea of the pitching machine for little leagues where obtained a patent for.  He also patented and idea for Torque converters in cars that is still being used today.  He was Presbyterian by faith.  Mike had the best outlook on life, even though always sick and not feeling well, he was always upbeat, positive and concerned for everyone else.  He truly led by example.   After retirement he started the best job he said he ever had, being a full time Grandpa.   Mike Bates, a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be always remembered.

Mike is survived by his wife, Jill Bates of New Haven, a son, Chad (Amy) Bates of West Frankfort, 2 daughters, Andrea Waite of Harrisburg, and Kelie (Keith) Quarles of Newburgh, IN.   A mother in law, Betty Roark of New Haven along with his precious grandchildren, Gannon Wargel, Preston Wargel, Griffin Quarles, Quincy Bates and Keaton Bates.  He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ronnie Bates.

Visitation for Mike will be on Monday, March 20, 2023 at the Cox & Son Funeral home in New Haven from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  His funeral service will immediately follow at 1 PM with Rev. Wade Halva officiating and interment will follow in Union Ridge Cemetery near New Haven.
