Thomas E. “Tom” Monroe, age 85 of Golconda but formerly of Gallatin County, IL passed on this life at his home surrounded by his beloved family. Tom as most knew him was born in Old Shawneetown, IL on August 27, 1935 to the late Charles and Mary (Thorne) Monroe. He was blessed with 2 wonderful wifes, his first Brenda and then Helen both preceding him in death.
He worked most of his life as a pipefitter and millwright. He was a proud Boilermaker Union member. He was Southern Baptist by faith, and attended the Sulphur Springs church. He moved to Golconda and bought a farm which became his real love. He enjoyed looking after the land and the wildlife. He also loved yard and rummage sales and had an assortment of items to prove it. Tom was a great storyteller always had a smile for you but mostly love to kid you. His life revolved around his family and helped to raise many of his grandchildren. He was a good man and will be missed.
Tom is survived by his children, Jimmy Monroe of Golconda, Rita (Clarence) Clutts of Golconda, and Jeannie Ledbetter of Cypress, IL 1 sister, Frances (E.A) Phelps of Omaha, and 7 Grandchildren, Jonathan Monroe, Katrina Gill, Regina Lingle, Crystal Mencyk, Timothy Jones, April Vaughn and Leal Clutts, 22 Grandchildren and 3 Great Great Grandchildren. He was also preceded by a brother, Herman Monroe.
Visitation for Tom will be on Friday, October 2, 2020 at the Cox & Son Funeral Home in Ridgway from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. His funeral service will be on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at the funeral home starting at 1:00 PM with Rev. Larry Hammer, Jr officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Westwood Cemetery near Shawneetown.
